Lauryn Hill Sentenced to Three Months in Prison

Lauryn Hill Mugshot

A New Jersey judge has just sentenced the singer/actress to serve three months in prison and another three months in home confinement after failing to pay taxes on about $1 million in earnings.

Hill pleaded guilty to the charges after being arrested last year. She faced a maximum sentence of one year on each of the three counts she faced.

"I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that," Hill said today, in explaining why she hadn't paid her taxes.

When she was arrested last year, Hill claimed that she had retreated from the public eye, including not paying taxes, in order to protect her family including her six children, five of whom are the grandchildren of reggae singer Bob Marley.

Before her sentencing, Hill's attorney said she had already paid more than $97,000 to satisfy her debts.

It's unclear when Hill will report to prison to begin her sentence.
